Autumn brings new dangers to construction sites

Construction sites are some of the most dangerous workplaces in New York. Although accidents and injuries can happen at any job site, construction areas are rife with danger for workers. Even the most cautious of construction workers may experience an incident that leaves them injured.

The fall season can bring numerous new hazards to construction sites. Fortunately, by learning about these threats, you can watch out for and prevent them.

Common autumn accidents at construction sites

As we stated before, injuries can take place anywhere, to anyone. But the nature of construction sites makes them particularly ripe for accidents. Take these examples of common accidents that happen at construction sites in the fall:

• Slip-and-falls: Slip-and-falls and trip-and-falls can increase in the autumn. Why? As trees drop their leaves, the ground becomes coated in the slippery foliage. Frost can also create slippery, hazardous conditions.
• Scaffolding accidents: Leaves and frost can also make it difficult to safely work on scaffolding, leading to serious injuries.
• Visibility hazards: Darkness comes earlier in the fall, making it difficult to see construction areas clearly.
• Equipment malfunctions: Cold weather can cause machinery to freeze up. When it does not function properly, it can injure the operator and bystanders.

No one should have to suffer one of these incidents at work. Employers have a responsibility to provide safe job sites. The failure to do this can result in a workers’ compensation claim or a personal injury lawsuit.

What to do after a construction site accident

If you work in construction and you experience an injury, you should immediately alert your employer. Then, seek medical treatment. You have the right to see your own doctor, even if your employer offers to provide one. As soon as you can after this, file a report with your nearest Workers’ Compensation Board. Some accidents may also have grounds for legal action, so consider your legal options carefully.
